Libs ordered to answer for election hate

Human rights advocates have welcomed a decision by the Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Tribunal to accept a complaint against Liberal Party election materials which allegedly incited hatred.
The Tribunal overturned an earlier rejection of the complaint by the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Sarah Bolt, following an appeal against Ms Bolt's decision from the woman who lodged the complaint, Martine Delaney.
Ms Delaney said that the Tribunal's decision gives the Liberal Party an opportunity to defend its actions.
"This is a serious matter which deserves its day in court", Ms Delaney said.
Ms Delaney alleges that Liberal 2006 state election materials breached Tasmania's incitement-to-hatred laws by declaring same-sex marriage "socially destructive".
Ms Delaney, together with a number of other Tasmanians, has also lodged complaints against members of the Exclusive Brethren, and Timber Communities Australia, for similar materials distributed in the 2006 state election and 2007 federal election respectively.
"Powerful religious and political groups should not be able to score cheap political points by stirring up prejudice and hatred against vulnerable minorities", Ms Delaney said.
