Same-sex partners "not companions" / Concern over possible delays to same-sex law
This media release was issued by the Australian Coalition for Equality on 4.6.08.

Gay rights advocates have strongly opposed any attempt to badge same-sex couples as "interdependents" or companions.
During debate this evening on a Rudd Government law removing discrimination against same-sex de facto partners, Opposition leader, Brendan Nelson, flagged that the Coalition will attempt to amend the legislation to recognise companions, and possibly include same-sex partners within that category.
Australian Coalition for Equality spokesperson, Rodney Croome, gave in-principle support to the recognition of genuine interdependent relationships, but said that it is wrong to see same-sex partners as 'long-time companions' or 'good friends'."
"Brendan Nelson must rein in the far right of his Party, and rule out the possibility of relegating same-sex partners to a legislative closet", Mr Croome said.
"It's time for our federal MPs to wrap their heads around the second word in the phrase "same-sex'."
Mr Croome said he is concerned that Coalition plans for a Senate inquiry into the interdependency issue may delay reform.
"The financial security of many retired and elderly same-sex partners depends on reform occurring quickly."
"All the states and territories have enacted this reform, and any further delays at a federal level would be unacceptable."
"If Dr Nelson is genuinely committed to his stated principle that 'no Australian should pay a dollar more in tax or receive a dollar less in social security by virtue of his or her sexuality' he should publicily commit his party to passage of this legislation by the end of June, or at the least that it will take effect from July 1."
The Coalition has also put forward an in-principle motion declaring marriage to be a fundamental social institution.
"We agree that marriage is an important social institution which is why it should be open to loving, committed same-sex couples and should not enshrine discrimination."
