Call for AFL anti-homophobia policy

This media release was issued by the Australian Coalition for Equality on 27.7.08.

Gay rights advocates have called on the AFL to adopt an anti-homophobia policy that parallels its successful anti-racism policy.

Australian Coalition for Equality spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said that players and club staff should be able to contribute to the game without fear of discrimination.

"The AFL has a long tradition of tolerance and inclusion which an anti-homophobia policy will build on", Mr Croome said.

"A strong anti-homophobia policy will not only protect gay players and staff from discrimination and abuse, it will benefit the Game by tackling the kind of prejudice which can harm team spirit and cohesion."

Mr Croome's call comes in the wake of comments by Hawthorn President, Chairperson of Beyond Blue, and former Victoran Premier, Jeff Kennett, about the "risk" associated with having gay players and staff, comments which linked this "risk" to paedophilia.

Mr Kennett was commenting on a discrimination case taken by Mr Ken Campagnolo who was sacked from Bonnie Doon Football Club after 22 years unblemished service as a trainer, when it became known he is bisexual.

Mr Croome said Mr Kennett should stand aside from his role at Beyond Blue.

"Mr Kennett's comments perpetuate precisely the myths and stereotypes which contribute to depression and suicide in the gay community", Mr Croome said.

"We call on Beyond Blue to fund programs tackling the effects of homophobia on same-sex attracted youth, particularly in rural areas."
